Maximizing Bedroom Storage For Peace Of Mind

When it comes to bedroom storage it’s all about creating the perfect blend of functionality + aesthetic bliss.

Your bedroom isn’t just where you wake up in the morning or go to lay that gorgeous head of yours at the end of the day. It’s where you get dressed for work, where you store your jewelry + girl, it’s where you slip into your comfy clothes at the end of a long + exhausting day. It’s where you relax with a good book in hand. It’s the place you have intimate conversations. And if you're anything like me it’s where, in the middle of the night, you find an unexpected toddler crawling into bed to snuggle up so close that it feels like you’re falling out of bed ....sigh.

In a lot of ways, bedrooms reflect some of the most personal pieces of who we are. Which is why it’s not uncommon to find a tattered old handbag that you’re not quite ready to get rid of...because it hugs your shoulder in all the right ways. Or a stack of jeans you used to love but for whatever reason they’re a little snug. And when it comes to that Mt. Everest pile of unfolded clothes piled at the foot of your bed...No shame, girl!

When it comes to tidying up + removing the clutter, creating a place for everything to live is paramount!! Because when it comes to making your home feel like a guilty pleasure, having the right bedroom storage not only helps you wrangle the chaos but more importantly it gives us peace of mind in knowing that everything has its place.

If you’re in need of extra space, here are a few of our favorite ways to maximize bedroom storage to turn your bedroom into one of the most functional yet relaxing places in your home.

DECLUTTER + ORGANIZE YOUR BEDROOM

Clutter is the excess stuff that likes to rear its ugly head in our physical homes or even our mental and emotional lives. And while the affects of clutter can be devastating –– defining clutter is often time in the eye of the beholder. Because something that looks like clutter in my eyes can easily represent a deeply cherished moment in your life. Which is why it’s not for me (or anyone else) to decide or to judge.

See, I told you this was a judgement free zone.

Simply put, physical clutter begins to appear when we have too much stuff + then suddenly, we look around + realize that we don’t know what to do with it all. Typically when things are messy, you don’t have enough space (or in this case bedroom storage), but you also likely don’t have a handle on any organizing systems either.

#TruthBomb for you babe: when you own less stuff, maintaining a clutter-free home is not only easier but it gives clutter less opportunity to take control of your time, your life and your energy.

So go on, start decluttering.

UTILIZE THE SPACE UNDER THE BED

The great part of being both interior designers + professional organizers is that we’re always looking for valuable real estate. Nope, not on Redfin or Zillow *wink* but inside of your home, like under your bed.

As you know, we’re not big believers in tucking things away (out of sight out of mind) or filling every nook and cranny of your home with stuff but if you’re being intentional about the things you keep + still you find yourself needing a little extra space –– under the bed is a great way to maximize bedroom storage. Or, if you live in a smaller home where taking full advantage of every square foot is a big priority, then under the bed storage is essential.

The great news is, you can store just about anything from out of season clothes, extra linens (like duvet covers or blankets), handbags, or shoes. Depending on ease + accessibility the possibilities of what you can store under the bed are nearly endless. Not to mention, so are the bedroom storage options.

From built-in drawers underneath the bed (swanky eh!) to individual drawers on wheels or even a good ol fashioned plastic bin that’s oversized, practical + easy to slide. The most important part of choosing what bedroom storage makes sense for your family is understanding what you plan to store in it + then choosing accordingly.

CONSIDER YOUR BEDSIDE TABLES

There are more than a gazillion different styles of bedside tables — wood, laminate, metal, open storage, closed storage, no storage. The list is plentiful + that’s not a bad thing. For most people, the nightstand is as extra storage but the real question is what kind of storage solution is right for you?Like most questions in the bedroom *wink* that's an intimate one.

So instead of feeling flustered, think of the bedside table area in terms of what you need or use on a regular basis + then, prioritize whatever space you have (on your nightstand or in your drawers) for those things.

You want to consider what you need when you’re sitting in bed — before you fall asleep + when you first wake up. Maybe this list will be short + sweet and you’ll be able to remove a lot of the clutter that's been taking up space in your nightstand. On the flip side, maybe you’re now realizing you need a much larger bedside table with maybe two or even three drawers.

Whatever your needs are, give it some thought + choose wisely.

SELECT FUNCTIONAL FURNITURE

On an introspective level, so much of who we are is contained within the walls of our bedroom; however realizing we often don’t spend a ton of our day here, you want to consider furniture that adds to the overall functionality to your space. For instance, an upholstered bed frame with built-in drawers underneath certainly fits the bill + when it comes to maximizing space, there are a plethora of other ways for us to incorporate functional furniture in a way that really ups the bedroom storage ante.

If you’re short on closet space –– okay lets be real, you’ve booted hubby out of the walk-in closet ––  a standalone wardrobe or armoire is an easy way to create some additional hanging + drawer space. Which reminds me, when it comes to drawer space, consider not only the number of dresser drawers but depending on what will go in them, the depth of the drawers is majorly important.

Now lets shift our focus to functional seating.  When it comes to creating a sanctuary for you to relax + unwind, we love designing bedrooms that incorporate a stylish bench, chair + ottoman. Not only does it make the bedroom feel more inviting but it can also go a long way in creating. a place to sneak away for some quiet time by creating an instant reading nook. But that’s not all. While there’s the added layer of livable luxury that comes with having an additional sitting area, your home deserves to be so much more functional.

That sexy little bench at the foot of the bed or that cozy looking ottoman that pairs perfectly with your armchair, if need be, can add a little bit of extra storage.

MAXIMIZE CLOSET SPACE

When it comes to decluttering + organizing your bedroom, don’t forget that sleepy closet of yours is an extension of this space (that’s often underutilized). In fact, closets are an excellent place for us to layer in some swoon-worthy customization by personalizing it for exactly what you need.

Why? Because you’re worth it!

But like anything worthwhile, in order to create a glamorous closet that rivals Carrie Bradshaw herself, you must first declutter + organize all of your clothes. In doing this, you’ll know exactly what you need from your closet + how much you need of it. You may decide that you want to hang just about everything in which case, you’d need more hanging space. Or maybe, that yoga pants + athleisure wear are your new everyday threads… in which case you’ll need plenty of drawer space?

Ask yourself, what do you use regularly –– every week, each month, seasonally?

Making a closet functional is paramount + is a great way to ensure you’re truly optimizing your bedroom storage space.

I know you want to create a beautifully organized home that feels like the ultimate guilty pleasure. A home that makes your heart smile. That fills your belly with endless laughter. A place where you're surrounded by those you love + everyone’s happy because they have enough space to be themselves.

Whether you’re decluttering + organizing your bedroom or revamping that sleepy ol closet of yours with a custom closet consider just how impactful these tips could be in making the most efficient use of your bedroom space.
