The Kirkland House: Living Room

SAY HELLO TO THE KIRKLAND HOUSE — LIVING ROOM.

Psst... Have you peeped the kitchen remodel, yet?

Given the traditional yet somewhat open floor plan of this northwest craftsman-style home, the light + airy color palette that was chosen for the kitchen remodel was carried throughout the downstairs which creates a cozy sense of continuity + design cohesion as you move through the house.

Having almost entirely all hardwood floors downstairs, we’d be amiss if we didn’t draw your attention to fact that these beautiful wood floors were carefully refinished.; taking them from a honey-colored oak to a toned-down light blonde that is absolutely gorgeous *sigh!*

And as excited as they were about having swoon-worthy hardwood floors, it was important to our clients that this part of their home have a laid-back + relaxed feeling while also having a little bit of elevated sass. And if we don’t say so ourselves, this family room is the absolute perfect expression of that.

Ultimately what this room (+ our clients) were craving was the subtle blend of timeless pattern with a pop of personality underfoot.

So, when it comes to the Kirkland House living room we wanted to make sure the seating area felt grounded. And as much as we love those hardwoods, we wanted to avoid having furniture in the room that feels like it’s floating in an endless sea of handsomeness.

Because when it comes to creating a beautiful + functional home –– a home that’s layered with depth + dimension always feels complete! It’s also why we layered into the room, a large navy blue area rug –– to help anchor the space while adding some much-needed texture, depth + visual movement.

When it comes to the layout of this space, this active family of 3 wanted nothing more than for us to create a comfortable place for everyone to hang out after a long + exhausting day without feeling like they were piled on top of one another on a movie night.

And that my friend is exactly why, having an oversized family-friendly sectional + upholstered ottoman, nestled into the corner of the room was a must! It’s also why we tucked a handful of comfortable counter stools that were upholstered in a soft neutral fabric, beneath the kitchen counter.

Ultimately the goal of the space was to fulfill exactly what a living room should be — well dressed but casual + inviting.

It’s like yin + yang –– a sectional with clean simple lines that’s perfectly balanced by a buttoned-up vibe in the texture + pattern of the accent pillows.

A round side table with a black metal finish flanks the sectional. You’ll notice that we carried black in a few other areas of the room. Certainly, the lamp that sits on top of the table is one of them but that’s not all we’ve repeated. Drawing inspiration from the upholstered fabric of the counter stools, we chose a linen lampshade that again carries continuity between the kitchen + living room.

It’s paying attention to details like this, that elevate home and showcase the intentionality in which a beautiful home truly comes to life.

And when we’re furnishing a space, we always take into consideration + play with scale. To balance out the oversized sectional and to create a functional television area in the home we opted for a warm wooden entertainment console with crisp black modern hardware.

Finally, to round out the Kirkland House living room + finish the space off, we layered in a handful of wooden accents, a round tray, greenery, a textural throw blanket + even a piece of  artwork our clients had acquired during their travels.
