The Bothell House: Family Room

BEFORE + AFTER

DESIGN DETAILS

To help clients visualize + effectively communicate with contractors and other vendors, here are a handful of project details from the Bothell House.

We’re so excited to share details from The Bothell House: Family Room –– one of our favorite projects in Bothell, Washington.

From a complete remodel of the entire downstairs to furnishing + styling each room, our clients wanted our help in creating a home that left the mid-1990’s craftsman style in the past + welcomed in a more modern version they could call home.

The family room of the Bothell House was designed for family movie nights + Seahawk football games but serves as a casual everyday gathering space at home. Centrally located at the base of the stairs + just off the kitchen we knew this room would get a lot of use.

One challenge in designing this room was that the space itself is long, narrow + more of a skinny rectangle –– with one end being the fireplace + the other being the kitchen counter.

Wanting to create an open + inviting space, without blocking walkways or disrupting the natural flow of foot traffic, we designed the family room around the fireplace/tv. By incorporating an asymmetrically shaped sectional + a “look at me” leather chair it’s a contemporary approach to creating relaxed seating that invites you to linger with a book or in good conversation for hours on end.

Ultimately, Kayleigh wanted her Family Room to serve as a beautiful backdrop that could withstand the test of time which is why we wrapped the sectional in an earth-friendly, high-performance Crypton fabric –– which is basically bulletproof when it comes to red wine + upholstery. Not to mention, the black leather armchair is family-friendly (+ fido approved) too.

While both the furniture layout + durability of fabrics selected are suitable for everyday use the other goal for this space was to accommodate large gatherings by ensuring plenty of space for barstools, footstools + even a long bench from the breakfast nook area that could comfortably be integrated for additional seating as needed #GoHawks!

However, one of the architectural aspects of this room that distinguishes the family room from the rest of the home is the stop + stare fireplace.

With a timeless Carrara marble fireplace surround, the geometric pattern creates a luxurious layer of texture that perfectly complements the crisp white mantle while giving a gentle nod to the original craftsman-style details. Instead of being a laissez-faire focal point we designed an architecturally interesting feature, that perfectly showcases a more modern way of living (without going overboard!)

Realizing the family room is filled with light throughout the entire day, custom ripple fold drapery has been stacked on the far left hand side of the room + every window is layered with grey linen roman shades (including the patio door!). When it comes to drapery in this room we saw it as being more than a finishing touch, it became the perfect solution to balance the vertical height of the TV with the rest of the room.

And because we truly understand all of the holistic benefits nature has when it comes to our mental, physical + emotional wellbeing at home, we incorporated greenery + other biophilic elements of nature to help fill in space holistically.

Like the dining room, the family room overlooks a gorgeous + beautifully landscaped backyard which is why in the family room an oversized solid navy rug is used to hide party-foul oopsies while also creating a durable softness underfoot.

By opening up an otherwise unusual closet, we created a fabulous niche for tall metal bookcase with lots of texture to live. Functionally speaking, it allowed us to hide the wifi router (+ any other technology needs in the family room) while styling the shelves in a way that layers even more personality into the living space.
