9 How-To Tips for Maximizing Joy in Your Space

We could gush over Pinterest + Insta photos alllll day, but when it comes to the space you live in you want the best interior design + there's so much more to it... than bajillions of shiny new distractions.

As a Seattle + Bellevue interior designer crazy about decorating + organizing the interior of your home, we’ve round up 9 of our favorite tips for bringing joy into your space... the happy-dance, completely addicted, is-this-real-life kind. ;)

There is literally scientific study that shows color plays a huuuuuge role in how you feel about your space, but also how you feel IN your space. If you want a home that brings you joy, take some time to discover which colors keep you crushing for a long-time.

A great exercise to do is to think to yourself for a moment, the best interior designers in my opinion invite color in what ways?

Most of our clients think of adding color in one pretty on the nose way: painting walls. Sure, both soft + strong tones of colors can be brought into your home by painting walls. But pops of color in throw pillows, blankets + rugs with a neutral backdrop of whites + grays are just as effective.

And remember, it's not about making only your eyes happy. What color(s) give you excitement + that heart-tingling feeling of absolute contentment and bliss? Like finding the right man (I’m winking at you, John!)

...you’ll know when you know!

Light hardwood floors with a heavy patterned rug and custom drapery.

Real talk, you simply can’t get into your happy zone if you’re stubbing toes on the coffee table every evening *yikes!* or you’ve got an awkward corner in your living room that no matter what you do with it, never feels right.

Once you recognize how you’re interacting (or fighting) with your space, you can pour some creative juice into the solution! Something to keep in mind is, as much as space planning the interior of your home is about how you live in a space it’s also about how it makes you feel.

You purchased that oversized sofa for your somewhat small living room thinking it would create a welcoming environment for friends + family to socialize but now that it takes up too much of the living space it feels uncomfortable + uninviting.

When it comes to little inconveniences, it’s easy to push them aside. They’re not the end of the world, right? BUT, happiness is an “inside job.”

Not sure where to begin with space planning + furniture layout? I happen to know one of the best interior designers *wink*

Texture does SO much for dialing-up the mood + creating a mind blowing space! Once you decide how you want your space to feel, you can texture. it. up.

Dreaming of a home design full of warm-fuzzies you can really sink into? Play up a variety of soft textiles, like wool, cashmere, shag, or knit. Layering these textures through throw pillows, blankets + area rugs is a subtle way to jazz up your home.

Craving a relaxing, retreat-away-from home that gives you all the feels? Add some items made from natural materials, like wicker, rattan, raffia, or jute. Pulling in natural elements through small furnishings like side tables + chairs as well as home accessories + decor is the perfect way to pack a subtle professional interior design punch.

As home organizers, we know the spine-tingling joy you’ll get from having an organized home… not limited to feelings of lightness, peace + boundless freedom! Yeah boo, it’s possible.

Buuuuut, we also know how gosh-darn-easy it is to drag your feet on maintaining a clutter free home or getting started organizing. Take it from us — when all is said + done, you'll be wondering why on this lush, green Earth you didn't do it sooner! (Yup, we've heard this one over + over again.)

So if you have some spaces that could use a little love, give ‘em all the love you’ve got or come pow-wow with us. Your joy + your home depend on it. ;)

Lighting can seduce you, entice you, or… put you right to sleep! That’s why it’s so important to find lighting of all kinds (chandeliers, pendants, sconces, floor lamps, table lamps, task lighting, overhead lighting… ok, you get the point) with the best undertones for your home + its function.

Look at the lighting in your space to see how it's affecting your daily activities. Are you constantly wanting to read in the evenings but squinting + hurting your eyes because there’s just not enough light to do it? Is watching a movie in the evening either too bright or too dark that is saps all the joy from your favorite rom-com?

A little interior design tip… switching out a bulb or two can stop the snooze-fest + have you throwing confetti or taking a pleasure break, instead. It’s up to you. ;)

A bright white kitchen with white countertops and cabinets, stainless steel appliances, glass pendants and interior decorations on the island.

No doubt about it the "less is more" rule applies to creating a home that brings you joy + feels like the ultimate guilty pleasure. Even if your home is organized, an over-crowded space with tons of decor + accessories does not make a happy soul.

Are there any items in your home that your family could happily live without? (Yes, even if they were gifts!) If so, consider finding those items a new + happier home.

You'll benefit from the spacious freedom and the joy of giving to others what you + your family no longer use. I’d call that a win-win!

No secrets here — replacing technology time with family time is comfort food for the soul. The easiest way to unplug from our devices these days (because let's be honest, it's hard) is to create a designated tech-free space.

It wasn’t until I found myself sitting in our living room with John + both of us were at opposite ends of Maxwell (our sofa… yes, he’s so comfortable we named him) scrolling on the phone instead of snuggling close + enjoying each others company.

Raise your hand if you’re human… No shame! :)

As an interior designer, I’m constantly thinking about how we can design + decorate homes to help nurture conversation, create a loving + caring environment + make people feel welcome.

Fill this tech-free space with things that you + your family love to do. Maybe it’s with books, games, creative activities, and best of all, furniture you + your family can sink into with ooey-gooey pleasure but this time, be sure to nestle in close!

We use all of our senses when living in our homes, so why not put a little intention behind one of the most powerful ones — scent!

*Ahem* ... can you say, “shopping break!?!?!?”

Treat yourself to a field trip of your favorite candle or home scents stores, and find some aromas that make your nose + soul tingle with joy! When styling a project with home decor this is one of my favorite ways to subtilely make loved ones feel welcome.

Add that favorite aroma to your home + you’re one step closer to that dreamy, head-in-the-clouds designer space.

Here’s another underestimated way to bring some joy to your home... plants! A little life + a splash of vibrant green = healing, liveliness + joy for the soul. Really, it’s a fact.

Now, if you’re thinking to yourself, “Sherri, I curse every plant I touch!” there’s still hope for you, my friend. Faux plants are just as effective joy-bringers + I’ve seen some that are so well-made they’ll have you looking twice.

P.S. for at least the first five years of our relationship, John + I couldn’t keep a plant alive! We are much better now… kind of :)

So go on… have no fear — go for it! Follow these tips + do that happy-dance along the way.
